Andreas Lolis (b. 1970, Greece) retaining a deep understanding of the sculptural tradition, stands out for his craftsmanship and the trompe l’oeil result in his work. His practise results in the subversion of stereotypes and the questioning of reality. His main ally is the precious material that he chooses for his work, marble, which is so closely linked to tradition. Art ctitic Manos Stefanidis very accurately points out on Andreas Lolis work “Lolis is creating allegedly ready-mades, compositions from modern city garbage, nevertheless using the most traditional and noble sculptural material. In turn the viewer falls for this trompe l’oeil, thinking that he is seeing cardboard boxes and felizol, while in reality what stands in front of him are white and colored marbles, the result of painstaking skill and meditation”. According to art historian Katerina Koskina "With this body of work, Andreas Lolis, refers to notions and shapes that function in a formalistic way like blockouts or replenishments of one another. Lolis creates unique, contemporary portraits of objects, that reference the primitive functions of nature and follow one of the sculptural traditions of Roman art." Most recently Andreas Lolis work was featured at Monodrome, the 3rd Athens Biennial, that was curated by Nicholas Bourriaud, Xenia Kalpaktsoglou and Poka Yio last fall.
